Urban fantasy/sci-fi is my genre, but this world had grimdark vibes that I disliked. Having said that, this book was on my mind all the time and I was hooked. I was super interested in the plot and the twists and turns. I especially loved how the readers knew everything from both Nova and Adrian's points of views, but the characters themselves had gaps.
Initially, I didn't have any strong feelings about any of the characters, but I started to warm up to them as the story progressed. I loved the home family (Leroy, Honey, and Winston) and liked the work family (Oscar, Ruby, Danna, and Max). Nova and Adrian were alright too. Winston was the real MVP and I felt so sad that Nova neglected him, given how he viewed her. I also felt bad for Gene and Narcissa, and the burned libary pained me.
Furthermore, I despised Genissa and Ingrid, who may have been on opposing sides, but were the same selfish narcissist. It was kind of obvious that Ingrid would betray Nova too. The ending, however, was disappointing. Nova was finally starting to believe in the world but got scared off by Agent N, and to top it off, Ace was still alive. I didn't have a good feeling about him and am intrigued to see how the series continues.
