The Third Day, The Frost by John Marsden

5.0

Another great entry.

In this entry we catch up with the group as they take on their biggest military target to date; Cobbler's Bay. The Bay has been referenced in the other books yet I always assumed it would be attacked in the finale book, which I was wrong about, and from the end of this book it's clear that the series will be going in a completely different direction to the one I had first assumed.

The suspense of the attack is handled (as always by this point) brilliantly, with even the more outlandish moments, like getting caught up in a tidal wave created by an explosion, seeming realistic and believable. It continues to surprise me how detailed and exciting the author manages to make the 'tactics' of the novel, especially with things like sentry duty, which helps the suspense of believing the kids could get caught at any moment. I'm also shocked by how much the violence is escalating with every instalment, with this entry having the main character 'toughen up' and realise that she can deal with killing in cold blood and realising as 'the leader' of the group that the responsibility to protect them falls on her shoulders. This is also the first time where the main character seems to have a real crisis of faith, and even though we know that she will inevitably be okay, the parts where Ellie simply chooses to accept that death is coming, are a lot darker than I imagined the novels to become.
The ending certainly takes a turn I wasn't expecting, and it will be interesting to see how the story continues without the old setting of their town, and the fresh blood that will no doubt be a part of the new setting.

Overall, another great entry, let's hope they keep up this level of quality.
