The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
5.0
I had avoided this book thinking it would be too depressing but then my mom kept insisting I give it a go, and I’m so glad she did. I LOVED this book. I waited everyday to return to these characters and their lives. This book is visual and visceral in effortless ways. I love that it has a queer storyline in it without much or any fuss. The interplay between the characters, the wistful reminisces of what has and could be. I was enwrapped in this world.
Admittedly, not all of it is easy to read. A lot of the book is downright heartbreaking, but the book doesn’t wallow. The author steers clear of trauma porn to create a story of identity and belonging. This book is about people and what they make of the hands they’re dealt with. It doesn’t persecute nor victimize its characters. And best of all, it steers clear of the usual cliches.
Such a wonderful read from start to finish. Kinda wish I could read it for the first time again.
