Mary, the Rector's adult daughter, lives with her ailing sister and widower father. The Rector is severe, scholarly in the most cramped way, and is largely taken care of by his daughter. Mary's and her father's relationship with a local curate make up the heart of the novel. The novel consists of set pieces--some of which bring to mind Emma, particularly with respect to Mr. Elton and Mr. Elton--and the inner life of Mary.
