I have always been fascinated with Judaism. Even though I am a Christian, I can see similarities between my denomination and the Jewish religion. The separation of clean and unclean meats. Men being the head of the household. Keeping the Saturday Sabbath as God's holy day. An unfortunate emphasis on works over grace.

With those similarities to the author, I was curious about why she decided to reject her Hasidic roots and what beliefs she would embrace instead. My heart aches for the author because her memoir portrays a woman who is forced to live under a strict set of rules without knowing the reasons behind them. She was never encouraged to study the Scriptures for herself and understand the WHY behind the traditions. God had a reason for setting laws into place for Israel as a nation. Without that context, I can understand why the author decided to reject her roots.

Unfortunately, at the end of the memoir, the author still has no understanding of who God is. I hope that she has found Him or finds Him in the future.
