The First Emma
by Camille Di Maio
The First Emma is inspired by the true story of Emma Koehler, who is happily married and runs a brewery with her husband, Otto. One day she is in a tragic accident and subsequently experiences betrayal from Otto. 30 years later, Emma is dying and a young woman named Mabel flees Baltimore and her heartbroken life to help Emma write her memoir. This novel explores the strength within Emma and her courage of running a brewery during Prohibition. Mabel is fascinated by Emma and her story, and is also able to turn her life around. I was surprised by how much I loved this story. It has some slight Evelyn Hugo vibes. This novel is historical fiction with a little bit of murder mystery sprinkled in. I really enjoyed Emma and Mabel’s perspectives, along with little tidbits of newspaper clippings throughout the book. Highly recommend!
