It is a gender role–reversal romantasy set in a world divided between matriarchal and patriarchal kingdoms. Princess Olerra, holding a secret, kidnaps a prince from a male-dominated land in hopes of securing her place in the line for the throne.
The premise hooked me immediately—especially after reading the author’s note. Most fantasy books lean heavily on patriarchal societies, so the inversion here felt refreshing. The world was easy to picture, though it leaned more toward satire at times, which softened the darker themes I expected.
The story kept me engaged and was a quick listen (I finished the audiobook in just two days). Characters were well-developed, but I didn’t feel strongly connected to them emotionally. The romance, while convenient and somewhat predictable, worked well enough for the setup. The pacing was steady, and there were no major twists or surprises.
Overall, I’d call this an entry-level dark romantasy. It touches on heavy themes but never goes too deep into them, making it a good gateway for readers curious about darker romance elements without being overwhelmed. As Levenseller’s first adult romantasy, it was an intriguing shift from her YA works, though I wasn’t sure if it was meant to be satire or straightforward dark fantasy.
