3.0

A book about oysters? Or a book about the colonization of Manhattan and development into New York City as told by an oyster? I believe the latter is more accurate. The oyster a metaphor for the thriving and destruction of life. The City a metaphor for the precariousness of the ecosystem in the face of Western colonization. Kurlansky paints a vivid picture of the vibrant City, particularly in the post-Victorian, New World era.

I'd give it 3.5, so I guess I give it a 3.
