Thunder Rising by Erin Hunter

3.0

So far, “Dawn of the Clans” hasn’t been as great as I was hoping. I’ve gotten used to the pattern in the latest Warrior cats series where the first three books are full of potential, while the last three fall flat. (This is exemplified, in my opinion, by both “A Vision of Shadows” and “The Broken Code.”) I liked “Thunder Rising” much more than “The Sun Trail” (because I’m more attached to the characters now and like the intensifying drama), but I’m still holding out hope that the series will pick up in the second half. The good thing about Warrior cats is that, even when I’m not impressed by a particular book overall, I enjoy finding out what happens next and can usually find at least one scene or character that stands out to me. Right now, those characters are probably Jagged Peak and Turtle Tail. I fear for what might happen to them next, but I love the unconventional family structure they have created together! I also want to keep going, because I’ve yet to meet certain cats I know will be important, like Moth Flight and Star Flower. Every time new kittens are introduced or another rogue appears, I’m listening to MacLeod Andrews narrating at the edge of my seat!
