cardsbycourt 's review for:
After
by Anna Todd
Disclaimer: This is not making fun of fanfiction, I think fanfiction is important and I genuinely have read fanfiction that is better than some published books, that being said, this fanfiction did not need to be a published book. (Also beware I swear in this review)
I finally read this shit show of a book. I listened to the audiobook and so whoever reads this physically, you really are so powerful.
I started reading this as a joke, wanting to make fun of how bad it is. But then I thought about how it's a bestseller and thinking about young girls reading this and thinking that this is what a relationship is and I got upset. This book not good. It romanticizes a codepdendent and unhealthy relationship.
The things I liked: the ending did kinda surprised me
The things I didn't like: I literally hated how Tessa's virginity was touted and perceived as sexy, Hardin is a terrible person, they have sex a lot when one or both of them are drunk, Tessa says the word perfect literally a thousand times (according to her everyone has a perfect face, perfect lips), they have sex to end arguments, their relationship moves way too fast, heteronormativity assuming sex is only penetration and not other forms, slut shaming other girls, intense jealousy that is perceived as love, the list goes on and on
One thing I will say is that I don't completely blame the author. I'm assuming that she was younger when she wrote this and you can tell that she is processing a lot of internalized feelings. That's totally valid for a fanfiction. But who the fuck decided that this should become a published book and A MOVIE. The unhealthy behaviors are never questioned and shown to be acts of love. I really hated this particularly because I know if I were younger when I read this, I would have thought this is such a perfect relationship. I think that's what bothers me most, no one sat here thinking, hey maybe this will create problems for young girls, maybe we shouldn't publish it and make a goddamn movie on it. So yeah, I will not be continuing on in this series
