After his girlfriend Marissa dies in a house fire in college, Nick is forced to mourn her and move on with life. Twenty years later, he sees a girl that looks astonishingly like Marissa, mannerisms and all. Feeling the need to ask her if she is related, he walks up to her, only to have her drop what she is holding and run out of the store.
The next day, the police are knocking on Nick’s door, asking for his alibi for the previous night. The girl he saw at the store was found, strangled in a hotel room. Nick doesn’t understand — why would they suspect him? He only tried to talk to her in the store the night before.
But then, the detective drops a bomb on him: the dead girl had his name and address written down on a piece of paper found in her pocket. He doesn’t know the girl or her family, but apparently she knew him.
"Somebody I Used to Know" is a well-written mystery, with twists and turns at the most unexpected spots. Nick is forced to bring back his tortured memories from his past, question old friends about Marissa’s last movements, and meet new, mysterious characters in search of answers. Who is this girl, and what did she want with him?
