2.5

Sensitive and quiet portrayal of girlhood, mother-daughter relationships, and colonial rule in Antigua. I found some parts of this quite moving, but for the most part I found the writing style so detached and simplistic I felt miles away from all the characters - which is weird because a lot of the reviews I saw deemed this book “intimate”. I didn’t really understand many of the characters, and the ending seemed really abrupt because the main character’s narrative voice didn’t develop as she got older - so when she was moving out, she still seemed to be some unknown age and not in her late teens, just because there were no implicit clues (imo) of her age
