Winter Solstice
by Rosamunde Pilcher
Bait and switch book. It started out so beautifully as I got to know dear Elfrida and Oscar. Then add a tragic accident, a move to Scotland, a (farfetched) family fight, a mysterious stranger, and before you know it, we've got a very wordy Hallmark movie. By the end I was skimming long paragraphs to get to the dialogue that moved the story along. I never stopped loving the character of Elfrida, but somehow in all of those words it skimmed over the grief that I felt deserved a more prominent role.
