The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri

5.0

5/5 stars. Oh my god.

This book is following two protagonists that entangle in an f/f enemies to lovers relationship. Malini and Priya are both morally grey lesbians who’s journeys interconnect in unpredictable ways.

Priya is a priestess, and sister of a rebel. She has so much depth and development throughout the 500+ pages and I was able to relate to her in a way I don’t think i’ve related to a character in a very long time. Priya is strong, shy, and passionate about what SHE believes she has to do for herself, the world, and her friends/family, in order to save it. Priya is masking as a maidservant in the Hirana for around 40% or so of the story.

Malini is the sister of the dictator, and is struggling throughout the story with doing what is TRULY right for the world, herself, and with the power she holds by name. Malini is also a princess, and is an imprisoned traitor that had been banished to the Hirana temple by her brother. Every day that passes Malini gets sicker and sicker, and her only hope is to befriend and “manipulate” Priya, the maidservant, until it becomes something more.

I absolutely loved this story. It may have taken me almost EXACTLY a month, but it was phenomenal. The world building was phenomenal, I loved all of the Indian lore/inspirations, the characters were diverse, and the writing style was fantastic. It took me a minute to get into it since I don’t read much fantasy, but I am so glad I continued. Malini and Prius’s relationship is one that, although can be toxic, is only so in a way that is understandable and inevitable. The way that the two care and protect each other was beautiful. I was also very fascinated by Priya and her brothers relationship. Although it seemed as though at times he cared about Priya, that would later be proved false since everything he (seemingly) did for Priya was for his own gain and power.

I will cherish this story for years to come, and I can’t wait to pick up the second book, which I have an arc of and hope to read soon.
