The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton

3.0

The reason why I wanted to read this book in the first place is its beautiful cover. I saw it and I just knew I'd have to buy this book. That's why when I started reading this book, I only knew this novel is about a girl with wings but besides that I didn't really know what it is about.

But to be honest, that didn't turn out problematic and either way it is very hard to tell what this book actually is about.
I was surprised when I realised the whole plot takes place in the past. But actually one doesn't really notice this while reading. The novel tells the story of Ava, her mother and her grandmother - in chronological order and it centers on their (rather tragic) encounters with love. Also, there were very many magical elements involved. More than I'd expected.

I have to admit I had expected something different from this book...and more. It's just that the first half of this book dragged on and on and everything seemed so distant and the real story hadn't even started yet. Some things were interesting. But all in all I was somewhat bored, annoyed, sometimes confused and I just kept reading to get to where the main story starts.
Turned out the main story couldn't exactly take my breath away either. But then towards the end, something changed. The last fifty pages of this book? Best part of the book. I really liked them. They are simply wonderful and I LOVE the ending.

What so many others seem to love about this novel is its writing style. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. I mean this novel is certainly well written. But I didn't particularly enjoy the writing, it wasn't lyrical or beautiful or even special to me. It was just fine.

Let's get to something more pleasant. The character's names. They really are exceptional and I simply LOVE the name Ava Lavender. The characters are also rather interesting. Especially Ava's twin brother, Henry. He's a really interesting and special character and I would have loved to learn more about him and his thoughts. Actually I found that I'd probably liked the novel a lot more if it had revolved around him. As many other characters too, he definitely had potential. But Ava on the other hand wasn't really special to me.

So there are many things I didn't exactly enjoy about [b:The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender|18166936|The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender|Leslye Walton|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1397110326s/18166936.jpg|21445699]. But there are also certain things I really, really liked - Henry's way with (mixing) languages and words and of course the endingwhich is definitely worth reading the whole book for.
