Michael Amherst’s debut is interesting in a way I’m not to sure I can describe, I enjoyed the voice of Daniel appearing older than his years and felt it a great contrast to the other characters outside the family unit to keep us within a very insular viewpoint.
Yet a spade being a spade, it was a little boring and impersonal and whenever I felt myself excited about the way the story was shaping and how the protagonist might react it never particularly went anywhere or shaped future interactions in a memorable way.
Pacing issues made the story feel longer than it was but overall I’m glad I read it.
