Every so often I come across a Sci-Fi/Fantasy book that creates a world with such an obvious yet marvelous twist, I'm left astounded I haven't come across it before. Mr. Salvatore creates a world where a race of dark elves lives completely underground. There are all sorts of creepy crawlies that they have to watch out for, but they have to watch out for the back-stabbing their culture prizes. And because they live in a world without the sun, they see in infrared.

But a creative world without engaging characters will only get you so far. Luckily, this book as those too. The action is fast paced and spans decades, two things that aren't always easy to tie together. But it's done with ease here.

I'm definitely going to pick up the next book in this series.
