Before They Are Hanged
by Joe Abercrombie
"You could not even guess at the things that I have done. Awful, evil, obscene, the telling of them alone could make you puke...They nag at me from time to time, but I tell myself I had good reasons. The years pass, the unimaginable becomes everyday, the hideous becomes tedious, the unbearable becomes routine. I push it all into the dark corners of my mind, and it's incredible the room back there. Amazing what one can live with."
WOW!!
I thought I really liked The Blade Itself, and I did, but this was a knock out of the park for me.
The Good:
-Sand dan Glokta, I think he's my new favorite character of all time, or he's at least very high up there in the rankings. Holy shit. He's cruel, uncaring, sarcastic, and longs for death. He's the "I don't give a fuck" personified and I love him.
-Jezal dan Luthar. He was one of my least favorite aspects of book one, and in this book he went through an amazing character arc that made him so much better! I really hated him, and now I'd be sad if he died. Good on you, author, changing my feels like that.
-The stakes - So many OH SHIT moments, I definitely did not want to put this book down and was adequately miffed every time I had to. I want to start book 3 immediately.
-A surprising little romance. I'm definitely not a hater. I think it's ridiculous and awkward and very cute.
-Everything I liked about the first book, turned up to 11.
-Introducing a new, shadowy, villainous type presence. We don't know the motives and they're making strange moves. It'll be fun to see how that all pans out along with the rest of the chaos, there's even more machinations afoot.
The Bad:
-That it ended? No for real this was great.
-I suppose that some people didn't make it out of here alive, and that made me sad, but this is more grimdark fantasy, so...yeah, exactly what you'd expect.
The Ugly:
-TW for sexual assault. It only happens once, doesn't get very far, and is swiftly and mercilessly punished in the style of my murderous trash babies, but I always like to warn people it's there.
If you enjoyed the first book a lot, or even just a tiny bit I'd recommend continuing into this book. Even my least favorite perspective from The Blade Itself got an amazing makeover into a decent character!! I don't hand out five stars like hotcakes, the first book got a solid four, but this was really everything that I wanted and more.
