ehhh, a 3.5 star?

Coming off of Lead - which was amazing - this felt almost like a partial epilogue for the whole series rather than it's own novel. So much of it overlaps with books 2 and 3 at times - without giving the reader new scenes, at one point it's just a series of text messages that don't make as much sense if you haven't read the other books - that when the actual "we would like to try having a real relationship since we put the cart before the horse and oops we're pregnant" part of the book happens we get precious little time with Ben and Lizzy actually TOGETHER together (like, I feel like the shit with his sister was very poorly timed for this plot).

Also with this book, I realized that I really didn't have a sense of what the music of Stage Dive sounds like. In both [a:Anna Zabo|6571479|Anna Zabo|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1549823417p2/6571479.jpg]'s Twisted Wishes series and [a:Kristen Callihan|4971535|Kristen Callihan|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1317481324p2/4971535.jpg]'s VIP series, I was able to get a pretty decent idea of what kind of rock music the bands made and understand why people really loved their music, why they were superstars (or, in the case of Twisted Wishes, right on the cusp of superstardom). But with Stage Dive, I wasn't really sure. We got some lyrics and the knowledge that a previous album was a searing breakup album and now the new one was all "i like to bang my wife" (because David writes all the lyrics), but music-wise I was lost. Even for comparison, Van Halen is mentioned as well as Metallica, but not what era Van Halen or Metallica, their sounds changed over the years. So if Stage Dive is a current band (like 2010-2015 era chart topper) who do they sound like - Arcade Fire? Coldplay? Arctic Monkeys? Five Finger Death Punch? (At one point Jimmy sings a Maroon5 cover, do they sound similar?) As a music person, I would have liked to have a better idea. (I've been thinking about this more since Jen Prokop was talking this last week or so about how pop culture references - or not - impact world building.)
