Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands
by Kate Beaton
challenging
emotional
medium-paced
This was a hard read for so many reasons. When I first started it, I thought it might be fun to send a copy up to a friend who's working at a mine in the Yukon, but as I read it, I figured maybe not. Probably not a story she needs right now.
Beaton raises a lot of hard and important topics in this book - being a woman in a male-dominated field, the ethics of the oil sands, the struggle of living in isolation. There were some really heavy moments in the book, so please check trigger warnings before reading. I love Beaton's work and while this was such a departure from her normal tone, it was done with such care and passion that it really worked.
Such a worthwhile read - but definitely a challenging one.
