The Way of Kings, Part One by Brandon Sanderson

4.5

4.5 stars.

I wasn’t going to rate this first half individually, but then I read the Afterword by the author which encourages readers to view this as a complete arc, so I am rating it as such.

I expected this to be kind of a slog, but it wasn’t. At all. It was actually seriously engrossing and compelling, even when it felt like nothing was happening.

Each of the multiple perspectives felt purposeful and important. They each presented a wholly different and distinct view of the world. I also enjoyed the various characters introduced during interludes, which helped to build the world beyond the limits of three/four main perspectives. My only reservation is I’m only really attached to one of the main characters, the rest are starting to grow on me. I’m a very character-focused reader and it’s difficult for me to give a book five stars if I don’t have those connections.

Overall I’m greatly enjoying this. I’m looking forward to continuing with this book and series.
