The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

5.0

“No woman should be made to fear that she was not enough.” — Samantha Shannon

in my opinion this was a masterpiece of high fantasy. i feel as if a part of myself will forever live in the rich world of the priory that shannon has created. based on not only its prose, but it’s praise as well, i can easily see this becoming a modern classic within the fantasy realm.

in this novel we get a sprawling cast of characters that isn’t overwhelming because shannon has woven their storylines together so seamlessly. each character was vibrant and had their own unique voice to their sections. we also get to see a high level of character development across all of our MCs: sabran, ead, tané, nicklays and loth. it was also a breath of fresh air to read about a world where sexism just doesn’t exist. obviously this realm has its own issues, but without sexism being a factor we’re able to see these stunning women characters flourish in any type of position without it being seen as out of the ordinary. i’ve never understood why so many fantasy authors write in our real world issues when they don’t even need to exist.

i would recommend this book to any fantasy lover and have been over the past couple of week. can’t wait to read the sequel!
