Barbarian Alien by Ruby Dixon
5.0

I feel like I need to explain myself. Not because I am reading the second installment of a universe shattering alien-human romance series; that requires no explanation. No, I need to explain because I wrote an effusive & gleaming review of Ice Planet Barbarians (book 1), proclaiming it the summit of romantic literature. I thought that must be it. The peak. The best we can do as a society. In short, I was wrong.

I. Was. Wrong.

HOW DID IT GET BETTER? I need a written apology from someone (the author? @romantically-inclined who convinced me to read this series?). I cried entirely too many times. Vektal & Georgie are great. We stan. Enter hecking Liz & Raahosh? I wrote in my review of book 1 that I fell in love with Georgie. If that was love, I don’t even know what to call my feelings for Liz. Everyone needs a Liz in their life. She’s so hecking clever, I adore being in her head. Raahosh is a problematic teddy bear underneath the scowl & scars; he’s a brilliantly executed morally grey MMC. Their chemistry is undeniable.

By the way, despite what some may say, the cootie thing doesn’t get old. I snort-laughed at most “cootie” jokes and highlighted nearly a quarter of them for being comedic genius. If I had to pick a favorite (which is like asking me to pick a favorite child, by the way), it would be “My cootie purrs an agreement, the little whore”.

Admittedly, this book could use an editor. There are some issues with repetition, repeatedly explaining colloquialisms as if they’ve not been mentioned before, and general typos. There is also, randomly, at 37%, there’s a paragraph from 3rd person POV for no reason. This was true of book 1. I assume, somewhere along the journey of 22 installments of this series, she will get a good editor. But I suppose there’s only one way to find out, right?
