The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez
4.0

This was a cute coming-of-age, finding-yourself book. Malu (Maria Louisa) is starting 7th grade in Chicago with her “SuperMexican” mom, and away from her Florida life with her punk dad. I learned the term “coconuts,” and I’ve got a list of songs I need to listen to now, as I know nothing about “typical??” punk music nor Mexican punk music. I loved the “alterna fiesta,” the “Co-Co’s,” and that Malu found similarities with herself and Joe’s mom, Mrs. Hidalgo. I’ve got a student in mind for this one... (Please forgive me for not including the accent marks. I don't know how to do that here!)
