This one was a bit too YA for my tastes. The general world and vibe is strong, but the story itself kind of flows a bit too fast at times and definitely too conveniently. Characters seem to just be where they’re needed next for the plot with little explanation of how they got there. Also, having an unexpected third POV really slows the story down. I understand it’s necessary to give most of the geopolitical background and background for the “big bad guy” in the story , but I feel like it would have been better if all of that came from elsewhere in the story. Also, even though the timespan of this book is maybe a month long, every character acts like much more time has passed. At one point one of the two main character refers to their “journey together” as if they had been together for a very long time, but, even though it had been a solid third of the book, in reality it had been like 3 days and most of that time happens off the page. I think on the whole, there are kernels of a fun and interesting story here, but I think the cover art and my own imagination coloring in some of the barer details really do a lot of the heavy lifting in making this an enjoyable book.
