Howl for the Gargoyle by Kathryn Moon
5.0

This book was just adorable! This series is so fun and cute, and surprisingly heartwarming. I caught myself a handful of times, just reading this with a goofy grin on my face. Kathryn Moon does such a wonderful job writing things in this genre that feel new, thoughtful, empowering, and creative, and that’s what really makes me a fan of her writing.

In this story, we have a “monster” protagonist as well as a “monster” love interest! Hannah is a werewolf, unpacking the trauma of the attack that transformed her, and we see her really embark on a healing journey in this book. I thought it was super clever for Kathryn to make her a singer, too, so that she’s really forced to confront how the transformation has affected her voice and her identity as a musician. Hannah is gentle and initially at odds with the aggressive tendencies her werewolf side possesses, and she worries that she’ll hurt the people around her if she can’t find a safer way to get her needs met. Enter: Rafe.

Rafe is a gargoyle sex worker who is (pardon the pun) stuck in a rut, going through the motions in his job. Because of his natural strength and sturdiness, he gets assigned the more rough and rowdy clients, and he’s slowly realizing he’s not enjoying himself anymore. Until Hannah, who bucks the stereotypes of her species, who fascinates him, who cares as much for his enjoyment as her own.

The exploration these two have together, the safety they create for one another, was just so fun to read. The relationship, the sense of discovery, and the emotional healing for both characters is definitely the primary focus of the book. There are just enough story beats threaded through to give the book structure, but what kept me riveted was how fully Kathryn brought these two lovebirds to life. I had so much fun with this, and I’m excited for the next book in this world!

Special thank you to Kathryn Moon for the e-ARC! All thoughts are my own.
