Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

I'll admit, I'm a sucker for this type of "what if" alternate life scenario. Loved the movie "Sliding Doors" and the TV series "Sliders" and the show "Awake". Midnight Library, Dark Matter ... the Middle Falls series.  So my 5* rating may be more emotional than anything.

Here, the first three chapters introduce the setting/story and characters. Then, the story splits ... a simple decision, Chapter 4 goes one way Chapter 5 goes the other way. It isn't a set "every other" chapter, and the two different storylines weren't labeled in any way (no headers) and I honestly thought it would be a problem, remembering which fork we were in. I remember in the tv series "Awake" the two storylines had a slightly different coloring (a blue base, a red base). The MC there would wear a string to remind himself which he was in!  It actually wasn't much of an issue. There had been a major event that helped keep things separate.

I think one thing I loved here ... this might be a spoiler
was that our MC was HAPPY in both scenarios, even though they ended up so differently (unlike the movie Sliding Doors, where things seemed to end up the same, with one route taking a longer way). I think this actually says a lot about the MC, because some people will be miserable no matter their circumstances. Here, she was so grateful to be where she was, even though the road (especially the car accident one) was really rough. I'm not a "one true love" believer ... and this is a great showcase to that, different paths, both "happily ever after" ... although nothing is truly HEA because, life happens, and despite our MCs positive attitude, I'm sure there will be more challenges to come (if there was a sequel).
But I have to say, I loved the direction this took.

Great cover - title tie-in.  I went with the audio edition. Had the kindle copy to refer to but didn't really need. it.   Content: there were just three instances of proFanity. There was some sex, but nothing explicit that I recall.
