The Complete Montague Egg by Dorothy L. Sayers

I’m really loving these Yellowjacket editions, “a great series of best selling adventure and crime thrillers”, by Hachette India. Found an entire floor to ceiling bookshelf at my local bookstore and found a few gems, one of which, was this book, The Complete Montague Egg by Dorothy L. Sayers. I’ve read and enjoyed her Lord Peter Wimsey series but hadn’t heard of this lesser known creation, wine and spirits travelling salesman Mr. Montague Egg. Monty is intelligent, quick-thinking, respectful and principled and crime seems to follow him around!

The book has eleven short stories, each with a unique set of circumstances, tightly plotted and succinctly narrated. Sayers’ skill at plot is evident as is her penchant for getting straight to the crux of the crime. Whether it’s poisoned wine, manipulating time, manufactured alibis, or cats as murder weapons (yes you heard that right!), she gathers together a wide range of motives, methods and murderers! I really enjoyed Monty as a character and wished there were more stories in which he featured.

Recommended for cosy mystery fans in general and Sayers’ fans in particular 😊
