Circe by Madeline Miller

5.0

Ah, finally. A 5 star book.

“I was a goddess, and his elder by a thousand generations. I did not need his pity, his attention, anything.

‘Well?’ I would demand. ‘Why don’t you say something?’

‘I am listening,’ he would answer.

‘You see?’ I said, when I was finished with the tale. ‘Gods are ugly things.’

‘We are not our blood,’ he answered. ‘A witch once told me that.’” (Page 394)

There are so many good quotes and good lessons that I could pull from this book. And I think that’s why I liked it so much— Greek mythology often had moral lessons hidden within its strangeness, and this book kept that tradition despite its new telling.

It is a THICC book, and it did take me a month to read it, but it was absolutely worth it. If you like mythology, philosophy, or feminism, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I am putting Song of Achilles on my TBR list as well— can’t wait for Miller’s other retelling!
