Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer

2.0

You know, I saw a tiktok that said “being an adult is just enjoying all of my preteen interests without the self-hatred,” and that really resonates with me.

As I read this book, I thought a lot about Stephenie Meyer and about how her beliefs/worldview made their way into the storytelling. A lot of the assumptions she makes are very rooted in Mormonism as a worldview, maybe in ways she didn’t even mean to interject.

It was really fun to engage with Twilight in a new way, now that I’ve watched Big Joel and Lindsay Ellis videos about the franchise.

But most of all, it was fun to remember why I enjoyed these books when they came out, and the answer is pretty simple: they’re a wish fulfillment self-insert fantasy where the protagonist makes few choices, and that felt really comforting to me as a teenager. As I read, I got glimpses of those pieces that resonated with me so much then in a way that made me feel almost tender toward my past self.
