this was a good switch up from my typical reads! more of a horror/thriller that follows several characters on their scientific expedition to discover mermaids in the mariana trench. it was really cool to see the mermaid aspect of the story turned into something so biological rather than fantastical (they aren’t human! they are amphibians and have interesting animal behavior and physiology!)
the beginning was a bit slow but i thought it was well written. also included the theme of conservation and environmentalism a tad which i can appreciate. i thought it had some great representation too that didn’t feel too pander-y (we have a hawaiian fmc, 2 wlw fmcs, and 2 deaf fmcs that are the main characters of this story).
overall would recommend if ur looking for a gory mermaid read- i did feel claustrophobic/fear of the ocean coming through here but i didn’t think it was that scary haha. i think this would be a great creature feature too tbh
