A Tale of Two Cities
by Charles Dickens
Only a genius like Charles Dickens could have written this story. Dickens plotted every single detail from the first page to the last, making the French Revolution the perfect setting to show his ideas about love, vengeance, and sacrifice. In my opinion, it is a little weaker than other Dickensian novels that I have read because it is not a very character-driven story, which is one of the main strengths of his novels. Nevertheless, it is such a powerful tale about oppression and how society reacts when it is oppressed for too long.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way (...)."
