Inches beyond this face of hers and in the profoundest suffering of her body, the world went on in its grand and renewing and wholly indifferent beauty (Geoff 250).

Like Groff’s last novel, this is a work of historical fiction that centers a strong female protagonist facing a multitude of external threats, many attributed to men. 

The interiority of this narrative makes it feel like a retreat for the reader, as the young, starved protagonist retreats from the Jamestown colony.

I love Groff’s way with words.
