Blood & Steel by Helen Scheuerer
3.0
There is a lot that worked but what didn’t work is going to keep me from continuing to book 2.
What I loved:
- Thea! I want to follow her story and see her character arch through. She is very likable to me.
- World building and mystery around the magic was interesting.
- I loved Thea’s friends (until I didn’t)
- pacing was good and story line overall was interesting
What I didn’t like -
- The romance was such a dud. A slow burn into what you wanted to be piping hot coffee and your first sip was lukewarm.
- Hawthorne. Dang I wanted to love him. I still want to. He just never evolved into anything of substance and his hot and cold didn’t do anything but make me dislike him more.
- Freaking Wren. Not a good sister but I feel like the author doesn’t even realize that.
So the rest of the series is a pass for me. Especially since book 2 reviews seem to indicate there will be more of what didn’t work for me and less of what did.
Final thought, the comparison to Bridge Kingdom is very misleading. What a lie that is.
