Pirate Latitudes
by Michael Crichton
This was a fun read. I was quickly immersed in the Caribbean, especially the town of Port Royal, and thought the characters were easy to envision. The story isn't too overwrought and unfolded at a brisk clip. At the end it almost felt like the story was too short! The only complaint is the story is a little too cliched in that the hero is almost never at a loss or not the smartest person in any scene. It makes him enviable but makes the story a little shallow.
The story is about a daring raid by dashing privateer Charles Hunter and his carefully chosen crew to steal a Spanish treasure galleon from the harbor of a Spanish enclave. The story is set amidst the political realities of the time and the place, features treason, double crossing, and even the kraken!
