This book was very different from what I expected. It was much more violent, but without being gratuitous. The plot was predictable but still very entertaining. Honestly, my biggest surprise was the fact I didn’t really end up liking the FMC as much as I thought I would. 😬
As much as I really wanted to like Freya, she got on my nerves in this book. Self-sacrificing tendencies aside (side note: why do so many FMC’s fall victim to this trope?? LET WOMEN FIGHT BACK), Freya’s constant guilt and doubt were overwhelming, especially as the story went on. Although I do think it was somewhat intentional, it was very frustrating to see her constantly take one step forward then five steps back. I wanted to root for her but ended up rolling my eyes at her choices again and again. I amvery curious to see where this story will go and how her characterization might play out in the future. There’s a lot of potential for me to like her more in the future (I think).
I really liked the breadcrumbs of plot that wove throughout the story. I love when authors make me feel smart for picking up a clue early on and getting to enjoy the big payoff moments. I’m honestly kind of happy that it took me a year to read this book because now I only have to wait a couple weeks to get more answers to my questions and theories. 😅
