I am glad I read Three Assassins first. While not necessary for the plot, a lot of “where are they nows” are mentioned in passing and I’m glad I was able to take in those details in the right order. (As it turns out, I’ve got a special place in my heart for Kōtarō Isaka’s psychopaths.) Three Assassins also eases you into the writing style and format of this series; this one has a lot more going on—I’m glad I came prepared for this book.

Since Bullet Train became a movie, I thought this might be a better book, but they are both great in different ways. It’s impressive how well the author keeps these two titles similar enough to stay in series together while changing enough to make them distinct. Three Assassins takes place in many locations; it’s not particularly clear how characters will begin to overlap. Because Bullet Train predominantly stays in one location, it took significantly more creativity to create a similar plot mystery. The author did a great job reinventing his formerly used trope while raising the bar on action and entertainment. (Which is impressive—Three Assassins is NOT a boring book.)
