What a way to step back into the hunger games universe! Suzanne Collins did not miss a beat - every word, every sentence has a point. I was hesitant about reading this, because I didn’t want to read a story that had me rooting for Snow. A few pages in and I realise that there was absolutely no way that could happen. Snow is a classist, misogynistic ass who ends up almost crazed by spirals of his own making, which all connects to his character in the hunger games trilogy. All the characters were complex, incredibly well written, and fleshed out, including side characters. The songs scattered throughout the book are a welcome tool to set tone, sprinkle in some foreshadowing, and connecting to the original hunger games trilogy. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time to come.
