American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

5.0

I had to sit with this rating for a bit. I could write a book on how I feel about this novel, or I could give you a list of words this has left me with. For brevity, you will get the list. In no particular order, because I already said these in the right order to my husband, so now they come as they want:

Impacted
Impressed
Horrified
Disgusted
Challenged
Angry
Amused
Shocked
Bored
Unfazed
Fazed
Conversational
Mute
Conflicted
Saddened
Fascinated

There are more… But I think you get the idea. I am of many minds when it comes to this book. I’m not sure I’ve felt this split before. It has the only trigger I actively avoid, and yet, the guttural emotions I’m left with move me to give it all the stars. I am not condoning this book, nor would I recommend it, but it was extremely (to echo myself) impactful.

Quick end note: if you are here to read a longer version of the movie, you won’t get that. In a way, they are entirely different Patricks.
