Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a great start to a new Fantasy romance. We follow our fmc as she uses her unique abilities to infiltrate a crime organisation to gather intelligence for the silvercloaks, the same organisation responsible for the death of her parents. This book is set in a unique world where magic is maintained and strengthened through pain and pleasure.
I really enjoyed this one. I had a good time reading this throughout, it took a little while to be fully absorbed in the story (30% ish). The magic system was interesting with in intriguing well-developed world (kind of gave a Ketterdam feel for me).
There was diverse representation in this and it’s full of morally grey characters. I enjoyed seeing the characters forced into situations that conflicted with their moral compass and their struggle with the lengths they are prepared to go to for the ‘greater good’.
I enjoyed the dynamic between the characters as we see their relationship develop. This is enemies to lovers with our FMC & MMC coming from opposing organisations and a dark history that divides them. I’d say this is a slow burn romance but on the faster side of a slow burn. Whilst I enjoyed the romance, I think it’s equally balanced with the plot so it’s a good one for the more fantasy romance leaning readers.
Overall I think this was a good start a new series that was well written and I am interested in picking up the next one.
Definitely recommend picking this one up 💜
Anyone else read this one yet? What’s your thoughts? 😊
* I managed to read this one early as I was lucky enough to get a proof of this from Del Rey whilst attending RARE London*
