Chinese Cinderella: The Secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter
by Adeline Yen Mah
My daughter read this book when she was at high school and I've been intending to read it ever since. The author wrote her memoirs in the book ([b:Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots|1746572|Falling Leaves Return to Their Roots|Adeline Yen Mah|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-6121bf4c1f669098041843ec9650ca19.png|1429862]), and then took the segment of her childhood up to the age of 14 and wrote it in this book for children.
At first I was finding the writing style too simplistic and I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the book because of that, but I became accustomed to the style and was soon fully involved in the story. I was so involved that there were several times I was almost crying at the loneliness and misery of that poor little girl with her disinterested father, her nasty stepmother, and siblings who were frequently cruel. This truly is the story of a Cinderella, but one of resilience that keeps her spirit alive.
