Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
5.0
Another brilliant fantasy, involving ghostly spirits that attempt to destroy the human world even as humans use the same spirits to attack them, and as a control mechanism.
We're thrown back to the middle ages, a time of religion and chaos when food was scarce, prejudices and superstition underwrote society, and the 'church' were in control, answering to 'The Lady'.
Our heroine has several names in this book, all given to her. She is scarred: physically, mentally, and emotionally, but has a strong will and intelligence, two advantages that will support her through the trials and tribulations she will be forced to undergo to save humanity.
