A young woman in Renaissance Italy is bethroted to a young man she doesn't know. She receives a family heirloom, the skin of a man (not as creepy as it sounds), which she can wear so she can move around the world as a man, undisturbed. She chooses to use this to know the person she will marry.
The story is fantastic and weaves a lot of topics into the plot in a poignant way. I enjoyed this book in one sitting, but I will certainly be re-reading it many times!
