Exploring Calvin and Hobbes: An Exhibition Catalogue
by Robb Jenny, Bill Watterson
Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes was probably my favourite long-running comic strip and Watterson's famous reluctance to give interviews or really discuss his career has always left me with questions. I don't remember whose blog I found this book mentioned on but I'm so glad I picked it up.
The centrepiece of the book is the interview but there's a full gallery that includes his inspiration and un-edited versions of his own comic strips that show hints of pencils and corrections. I also finally got an answer for how Watterson combined his trademark linework with the watercolours for the covers of the collections. Some were painted but others, he just used an acetate sheet to draw the outlines and painted the colours underneath.
