The Push by Ashley Audrain

Soooo this book...

I did not love it. A coworker recommended I listen to it and I'm just not sure how I feel about it. She noted she was interested in how I would like this book since I myself to do not have children and everyone she had recommended it to so far was a parent and that might have made a difference in my experience. I was intrigued by the mother-daughter relationship and how the narrator spoke of her relationship with her own mother but when she became a mother herself, I did lose some interest.

I usually listen to audiobooks at normal speed so I can actually absorb the information of the book but at some point I had to start listening to this one at a faster speed so it would be over with. I felt like it just kept dragging on and the narrator's feelings and story just weren't important to me anymore. I probably would have DNFed it had I not been the majority of the way through when I felt this way.

The book built up some sort of suspense that something major was going to happen and it would be Earth shattering. While the death of a child is massive and a huge blow, it didn't feel like anything had changed after Sam was killed. The story just kept plodding along and the narrator just kept up with the same tone and worries as before. What should have been Earth shattering felt like another blip on the radar because the narrator had built up her anxieties so much already.

This book is really not a thriller. There is nothing thrilling about constant anxiety and insecurity in one's actions. That is what you get from this narrator. While I can see why many people did like this book, it really just wasn't my cup of tea.
