DOOM 94 by Jānis Joņevs, Kaija Straumanis

This novel was so good, such a delightful surprise. I found it in a quest to read something by an author from Latvia. It was so funny and cool. I am pretty much exactly the right age (born 1984) to find this young narrator totally relatable. I LOVED finding the ways an angsty Latvian teenager in the 90s was just like me— and the ways they were totally different. But also I want to mention again, this book was very funny. I was just along for the ride with the narrator for the whole book. It doesn’t have a tremendous plot to speak of, more a series of events that just happen as life moves by. And that was totally all right! One of the best books I read in 2022.
