Easily one of the best fantasy books I've read in a while. Yes, the main character seems to be good at everything. The main thing about that is this guy was trained since childhood with the best tutors. Yeah, he's gonna be amazing at a lot. But he's not *the best* in the school, which he admits. There are a lot of close calls. He also is a little whiny at first, but then he grows to make the best out of his situations. He's got anger issues and I love that. He lets that anger drive him forward. It makes him so human. There were classic tropes in there, but *they were done well*. It does feel like a setup book, but given that there's going to be 4 books, it makes sense. And it's not done boringly. And whoever said there's no worldbuilding clearly never read the book. There's a LOT. But there are also a LOT of questions unanswered still. I suspect they might be answered in the subsequent 3 books. And if there's still some unanswered, it's a great mystery for us to ponder. As a queer minority, I still loved this book. I'm 500% not upset at all that it followed classic fantasy and didn't really have minority representation. I'm hoping we'll see more variety, but I honestly wouldn't be mad if there wasn't. It's just not a type of genre I expect to see a lot of variety. Kind of how like I don't expect to see supernatural elements or a huge cast of characters in a contemporary romance.
