Literally show me a worse book—I’ll wait. As the intended audience, I found this utterly insufferable. If this represents the future of literature, then spare me, Mr. McClanahan.
Rather than a novel, this reads like a disjointed thread of biographical tweets, straining for profundity but landing in self-indulgence. Desperation seeps from every page, punctuated by gratuitous vulgarity and a cavalier treatment of death, trauma, depression, and sex.
Self-deprecation, sabotage, and loathing are not a substitute for depth, nor do they make one compelling, let alone the elusive “cool girl.” I wanted to love this, but I have rarely cringed so hard.
