A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow by George R.R. Martin
4.0

The book begins as fascinating and as captivating as always.
What I always praise Martin on is his characters over his plot. Obviously the plot holds the book together, gives characters means and motives, but to me, plot is secondary, it is the characters that i'm interested in, and that is why this book works so well as there is, in comparison to the other books, a lack of things going on. Obviously one could argue against that but in my opinion there's only a few things actually happening, and even then, in the case of Dany, it doesn't last. Daenerys is by far one of the most interesting characters and either Martin doesn't know exactly what to do with her or he's toying with the reader as she gets the least amount of chapters in the book. Bran's chapters are pretty dull and don't really add much to the plot, other than enforce on what Jojen had said previously, it was just about his character moving location. I wish more chapters were invested in characters who are actively doing something or are more intriguing, such as Tyrion, Sansa, Jon or Dany, but I still feel Martin knows exactly what he's doing, and I trust that even though I do find the plot secondary (for now), that the plot is going somewhere, because I have scenarios in my head and after that I'm thinking, what else could happen?

Overall, not my favourite so far, but I do understand this book was not written as a stand alone book, but the first half of what Martin wrote as 'book 3'. I can't wait for the next half of this novel as I've been told that it's one of the best in the series.
