Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm
by Greg Keyes
This is a superb bridge novel between the new planet of the apes movies. The story centers on Ceasar and his newly free troop (events of the past movie about 5 days ago) and the humans trying to deal with them and the simultaneous outbreak of the simian flu that we glimpsed aT the end and end credits of the last movie. While the virus sends San Fransico and the world into apocalyptic end times, that isn't the gist of the novel. Anvil, a military contractor, has been hired to deal with the apes... Are they trying to capture or kill? The two experts they hire can't tell. There are several memorable characters in the novel, both on the human and ape sides of the story. We already know Ceasar's back story, so this time we get Koba's. It's a good story and gives real insight on some actions from the first movie as well as hint at what is to come. The novel, as you might expect, isn't kind to the human cast, we get some great back stories on several of those characters as well, but I can't imagine more than 1 or 2 finding their way to the new movie. Their actions, however, should have a profound effect on the apes however, and I wonder at how that will play out. In the end, I think this would have made a good movie itself, but not quite the blockbuster the movie moguls are trying for. I really enjoyed the novel and think the author did a great job with all of the characters, especially the named apes. I can't wait for the movie!
